What stops organisations and individuals from investing in coaching?

1.  Cost

Executive coaching & development can be deemed as expensive, and some organisations may feel they do not have the budget to cover the cost of coaching for all their leaders.

If you think the cost of coaching is expensive, work out how much it’s costing you to continue with reduced levels of effectiveness, decreased productivity, high attrition rates, high levels of absenteeism and presenteeism.

The investment in coaching is negligible when compared to the cost of low levels of effectiveness and productivity in an organisation which can be anything from hundreds of thousands to millions of euros per year.

2.   Time

Executive coaching & development requires a time commitment from both the coach and the individual being coached. Some people may decide they do not have the time to do this and be reluctant to commit to the time needed for coaching sessions and follow-up work.

This decision is often a self-sabotage technique to avoid the real problem which is ‘what if I have to change and learn to do things differently’.

This ‘fear’ sets of a fight or flight response in our brains and helps us make poor decisions on how to proceed, keeping us ‘safe’ from change and away from personal and professional growth.

Sometimes we need to slow down to speed up! In reality, the time spent coaching makes us more effective, so we save time and avoid making timely, costly mistakes that could have been avoided.

3.   Scepticism

It’s quite normal for some people may be sceptical about the effectiveness of coaching and may not believe that it will provide tangible benefits.

The truth is effective coaching can have an astronomical impact on an individual and on your business. But the scepticism for some is real and maybe because of never experiencing it before – fear of the unknown is at play. Or, they have been on the receiving end of poor coaching. Please check all coach’s credentials and testimonials and if possible, ask to speak to someone who can be used as a reference.

A great coach will help you achieve your goals and aspirations in less time and with less effort than if you try to do this alone.

If you cannot find proof or evidence of the coaches expertise, you would be wise to steer clear!

4.   Fear of vulnerability

Coaching requires individuals to be open and vulnerable about their strengths and areas for development. Some people may be uncomfortable with this level of vulnerability and may resist coaching as a result.

Choosing the right coach that makes the coachee feel ‘safe’ and able to be open is an essential part of the decision-making process when it comes to working with a coach provider. All coaching sessions are 100% confidential.

5.   Lack of support

In some organisations, there may not be a culture supportive of coaching, and individuals may not feel encouraged or safe to pursue development in fear of looking ‘weak’.

If you are working for an organisation that does not support leadership development and it is important to you, maybe you need to challenge and change this or find alternative employment with an organisation that values developing their leaders.

Always check a company’s view on leadership development before joining them as this will give you a good idea of what type of environment you are heading into.

6.   Misconceptions

Some people may have misconceptions about coaching and may view it as a remedial measure or something that is only necessary for individuals who are struggling in their roles, rather than as a proactive measure for all leaders.

Coaching development programs are for is professionals who are serious about their success and the success of others. Leaders who work with coaches are already doing a good job and know there is always room to do better.

Some have never had any training so are ‘winging it’ and just need to learn the processes and tools to help them speed up and be more confident and effective.

And remember coaching isn’t just about development it’s about having a trusted advisor on your side in what can be a very lonely job when you get to the top!

Having someone you can 100% trust to bounce ideas with is a game changer and expedites personal and professional success.
